Long considered
the Holy Grail of Lowen & Navarro collectibles, Mercury
released
this
promotional-only CD to push a new single — a remix of "I've Had It All" (remixed to fix
a minor vocal glitch and punch it up for radio). We filled
the rest of it
with cuts from concerts in early 1994, as well as a couple of 1990 live
radio recordings from Cities'
97 in Minneapolis.
Until Hogging The Covers came out in
2006, it was the only available L&N
recording
of "Walk Away Renee" (written by our
friend Michael Brown) which had become a staple of our live set from
around 1992. It remains the only available L&N
recording of Bob Dylan's
"Tomorrow Is A Long Time".
The bi-lingual version of "We Belong" had been released on the
1992 Volume 4 Cities
Sampler, a limited edition CD of in-studio live cuts by
various artists, issued by KTCZ
for charity every Thanksgiving. Because the Chameleon
version of Walking On a Wire had featured an all-English version, it was a true
rarity, until Mercury's re-released six months later replaced the
all-English version with a bilingual version. This
version appeared again in 2008 on the 20th Anniversary Cities Sampler,
but the entire edition of 35,000 sold out in an hour.
The performance of Just To See You from Park West in Chicago came
just three days after the birth of Eric's twins, Sam & Annie-Claire.
Eric had flown home from Portland, ME, for the birth (making
it just in time) and rejoined us on the road the day of this
performance. Emcee Lin
Brehmer, WXRT's morning DJ, announced the births to the
800 people at the sold-out show as he was introducing us. So the
applause you hear on Eric's vocal line, "But here I am and I'm
the lucky one" was in fact a mass-congrats form the audience.
This concert has been featured periodically in WXRT's series
of Sunday Night
Concert broadcasts.
The two performances from Boulder's Fox Theatre
were toward the end of nearly two months of touring in below-zero
weather. Later that night, Dan slipped on some ice in the
hotel parking lot (ably abetted by vast quantities of pub ale, courtesy
of Big Head Todd's road manager) and broke his elbow. Good
times.
Mercury
pressed around 1500 of
these EPs, sent 150 or so to radio stations and the rest to fans who
had returned the tear-off cards from the insert to Broken
Moon. So it's out-of-print and extremely difficult
to find. Occasionally they show up on eBay, they go
for between $50 and $100.
We've considered releasing it again, though it seems a cruel thing to
do to those why ponied up big bucks for the collectible. So
we will likely make the tracks available in their original concert
context as part of the Live
Archive Series we will be launching in 2009.
From
the original CD package:
Dear
Friends and Fans of Lowen & Navarro,
This special CD is something many of you have requested. After seeing
their live show, "I've Had It All" was a song that sparked the set and
we felt it could benefit from a rockin' remix. So here it is, along
with six other odds and sods that have become staples of the Lowen
& Navarro live show. Enjoy it and play it 'til your heart's
content. Tell a friend about these guys, and thanks for all your
support.
